Lord Elgin Hotel – Press Release
Grill 41 to Open at Ottawa’s Lord Elgin Hotel
Food Network Star Chef Michael Smith collaborates on menu that is set to establish a new standard for grilled fare in the nation’s capital
September 8, 2010 – Ottawa, ON. In the fall, Ottawa’s next great restaurant Grill 41, located at the Lord Elgin Hotel, will be unveiled. The restaurant will feature a menu created in collaboration with renowned Food Network star and best-selling cookbook author, Chef Michael Smith, an extensive wine list and a warm and contemporary ambience.
Named Grill 41 in recognition of the year, 1941, when the Lord Elgin was built, the restaurant will feature a modern environment and a Canadiana-inspired menu that will be a perfect match for connecting with new and familiar faces.
Coast-to-coast Menu – Working in consultation with Chef Michael Smith, Grill 41’s Chef Aurelio Petraglia has created a menu that can be described as sophisticated comfort food with highlights including House Specialties – Tarte Flambée with a selection of toppings such as Ontario smoked bacon and smoked apple wood cheddar, Quebec Oka Cheese Nachos with the option of a lobster topping, Canadian Charcuterie Platter and Grill 41 Poutine with duck confit. As the restaurant name suggests, grilled items feature heavily on the menu with guests having the choice of Certified AAA Highriver Alberta grain fed beef, aged for 28 days, or a rack of lamb, pork loin or chicken all sourced from local Ontario farms. Fish and shellfish, including Atlantic scallops and salmon also appear on the Grill 41 menu and all grilled items will be served with a selection of daily market vegetables.
Chef Michael Smith has provided the table d’hôte menu with a sampling of his favourite flavours. The selection includes the Chef’s famed Chowder, with PEI mussels, lobster, scallops and whitefish, Grilled Rib Eye with rosemary mushroom gravy and Just-baked Molten Dark Chocolate Cake. A portion of the proceeds from these dishes will be donated to the Ottawa Food Bank.
“I've enjoyed collaborating with Chef Aurelio Petraglia to create a grill menu that showcases the best of the Ottawa region,” said Chef Michael Smith. “I’m thrilled by the Canadian feel we’ve incorporated and honoured that a portion of the proceeds from my special dishes will help support the Ottawa Food Bank.”
Contemporary Ambience – At Grill 41, guests will be able to relax in the inviting lounge with flat screen TVs and large windows overlooking Elgin Street, enjoy an intimate dinner or a group celebration in the private dining area that can accommodate up to 20 guests. With a capacity of close to 150, the restaurant will feature booths and banquette seating to allow flexibility to accommodate guest needs whether they are popping in for a quick after-work cool-down, a pre-theatre warm-up or an evening night cap. The restaurant features a renovated breakfast buffet area with an open view to the kitchen. In the evenings this area will be converted to a Chef Table available for private bookings. At the Chef’s Table patrons have the opportunity for a unique interactive experience as they will be served a themed tasting menu prepared and personally served by Grill 41’s Chef Aurelio Petraglia.
Accomplished Chef – Chef Aurelio Petraglia brings his red seal credentials and a great wealth of culinary experience from some of the finest establishments in eastern Canada and around the world to Grill 41. Aurelio started his career as an apprentice under renowned Master Chef George Mcneill at The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. Following his apprenticeship he did a stint with Toronto’s celebrity French Chef J.P Challet, after which he was granted an internship in Burgundy, France, at Bernard Loiseau’s three Michelin Star restaurant. Soon after Aurelio migrated to Quebec, and in Montreal worked with a number of accomplished chefs for three years. Since then Aurelio has gone on to work in Dubai, Bahrain, and most recently as the Executive Chef for the Relais & Châteaux Phuket Pavilions in Thailand. Aurelio has recruited Piero Catalfo as Grill 41’s Executive Sous-Chef.
“Just steps away from many of Ottawa’s great attractions, Grill 41 will be a perfect rendezvous for hotel guests and Ottawa residents alike, and a great spot for get togethers whether it be with work colleagues, family or friends,” said David Smythe, General Manager, Lord Elgin Hotel. “We were thrilled for the opportunity to work with Chef Michael Smith on the menu creation and we hope that diners will enjoy the variety of Canadian sourced choices including the table d’hôte option which a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Ottawa Food Bank.”
Grill 41 is ideally situated in the heart of downtown Ottawa: directly across from Confederation Park and the National Arts Centre and just steps away from the Rideau Canal, the future home of the Ottawa Convention Centre, Parliament Buildings and the Rideau Centre.
